The Origin of Evil

Sébastien Marnier

Prix Claude-Chabrol

In a luxurious seaside villa, a modest young woman finds herself in the company of a strange family: an unknown and wealthy father, his extravagant wife, his daughter, an ambitious woman, a rebellious teenager, and their creepy maid. Someone is lying. Between suspicions and lies, a mystery grows and the evil spreads.

Sébastien Marnier

After studying Applied Arts and Film, Sébastien Marnier published three novels: “Mimi” (2011), “Qu4tre” (2013), and “Une vie de petits fours” (2013). He is co-author of the animated series Salaire net et monde de brutes, an adaptation of his own graphic novel, broadcast on Arte in 2016. After directing three short films, he made his feature debut Faultless, starring Marina Foïs, a commercial and critical hit in 2017. His second film School’s Out, with Laurent Lafitte and Emmanuelle Bercot, was released two years later. His third feature, The Origin of Evil, was presented at the last Venice Film Festival before being released at the end of last year.

The 2023 Claude Chabrol Prize is awarded to The Origin of Evil directed by Sébastien Marnier.

Created in 2011 after French director Claude Chabrol passed away, the Claude Chabrol Prize each year rewards a French film released in the past year whose cinematographic qualities honour the thriller genre, as a tribute to the man who was “President for life” of the Cognac Thriller Film Festival and then the one of Beaune when created in 2009.

Claude Chabrol

“Any thriller involves two dimensions. First of all a metaphysical willingness of some sort, then a form of humility. These two things almost make up a definition of what an artist is.”
