December 1981. Arriving in Warsaw to deliver a lecture, Joan Andrews, a distinguished British professor, finds a city that appears calm on the surface. But at dawn, everything changes: martial law is declared. Telephones are cut off, borders are closed, tanks roll into the streets… Overnight, the country shuts down, and Joan finds herself trapped, unable to grasp the rules of the game. When she witnesses the secret police murder a student, she suddenly understands the true nature of the regime. She is no longer just a visitor stranded behind the Iron Curtain. She has become a target.
